Why lease or hire company cars?
For many companies - from one-man-bands to large corporates - buying your own vehicles makes little financial sense. Most companies choose to lease or contract hire their cars as a cheaper, more tax-efficient way of controlling their travel expenses. Consider just these basic benefits of leasing and contract hire, as opposed to purchasing a company car:
- With a lease or a contract rental you are hiring a car for a fixed period of months - therefore you only pay for the use of the car during that time and not absorbing the full depreciation costs for the lifetime of the car;
- Other than the initial lease deposit, monthly costs are lower than loan repayments for a new car of an equal grade*;
- Lease expenses (as for outright purchase) are tax-deductible so long as the cars are used just for business purposes. But as leases are cheaper in the first place, less expense = greater profit;
- Under a lease, the owner remains liable for car maintenance and taxation, not you*;
- You get to exchange for a newer model every few years;
- For a company with several or many employees, leasing is far more flexible than ownership or even leasing to an individual is, since the lease is held with the company, not the individual. If staff get promoted or even resign, leasing offers you a far more "open" car ownership solution.
